... eller skulle man kunna uttrycka det som "Sheila ryter till".

Irländska connemarasällskapet, CPBS, höll styrelsemöte här om dagen. HWSD fanns med på dagordningen. Hur gick det då?

På Facebook återger Frank Quinn mötet, och jag citerar:

"Kate Murray travelled to our meeting and made a presentation on HWSS .
Andy O Donoghue , Padriag Hynes and the Curran brothers were not in favour of testing for this condition."

Detta har fått Sheila Ramsay, ett av de tunga namnen i CPRG (Connemara Pony Research Group, som alltså är den internationellt sammansatta grupp av enskilda uppfödare/connemaraägare som ligger bakom att HWSD blivit känt och bevisats vara ett ärftligt tillstånd) att reagera. I ett inlägg på nämnda facebook-profil skriver hon följande:

After all, the research for the HWSD genetic test has consumed more than eight years of my life - and will continue to do so for some time, if the level of 'stupid' that is presently being exhibited by so-called 'leaders' in the Connemara Pony breeding hierarchy,

continues to be perpetuated.
DISCLAIMER: The following is personal point of view and does not reflect upon any organisations, businesses or educational institutes with which I am, or have in the past, been associated.
HWSD: One of the leading questions about HWSD has been 'what bloodlines are involved?' I am not about to damage ongoing pedigree/genetic research by naming ponies. There is however nothing to prevent taking inference about the people who own/owned/bred/sold affected ponies and/or stood/stand carrier stallions. This background goes a very long way to illustrating why certain people in various countries, who have a stranglehold on their Breed Societies, continue to totally deny the HWSD issue.
Background information on the 'gentlemen' of the CPBS who denied the need for testing for HWSD at the latest meeting. You have to ask why they are such rabid deny-ers?
1. owned and stood a stallion which is a proven HWSD carrier. He has left tested affected and carrier progeny. Those people present at the Clifden HWSD meeting will have seen the reaction when this individual saw a HWSD poster about a pony he had bred and sold.
2. Has exported two stallions; one each to USA and UK out of the same mare. Both stallions are VGL tested carriers and both have left affected progeny. Other progeny from the same mare have left carriers.
3. Has a stallion which has left carrier progeny from N/N tested mares.
Such an attitude gives other people a place to hide:
The BCPS also exhibits a similar attitude about HWSD as does the CPBS. On their executive they have:
1. Three breeders of 3 different proven carrier stallions.
2. A breeder and seller of multiple affected ponies - uses outside stallions including the ones owned by aforementioned people and the person in Ireland at #2.
3. Several of what appear to be 'grace and favour' members, who have never bred or owned a Connemara pony, according to the BCPS database.

Sweden:
An influential person in the hierarchy who owns and bred a carrier stallion and has sold on carrier ponies on numerous occasions. This person is on record (email) in 2007, as acknowledging having seen 'soft foot' as it was called back then, and going on to say that they thought there was 'something genetic going on'.
This same person now chooses to question whether the HWSD test is 'proven'.
Now for the good news! There are people hard at work, especially in Ireland, France and Sweden to haul their breed societies into the 21stC.
Even better there are societies who are already well and truly there!
You, the breeders, need to take a stand on how your society deals with the issue of HWSD! The easiest way is to just get on and test your breeding stock; then you can live with an easy conscience. Don't wait for some person with a vested interest in not testing, to say that you should.
Australia, Canada, 2nd Danish Soc, Germany, New Zealand, USA all have societies which have accepted the reality of HWSD and are promoting the use of the test. USA now requires that all stallions are HWSD tested. Maybe the reason why is because in all cases these countries had/have people on their elected bodies who have had personal experience of dealing with HWSD affected ponies? Some of these people have even since taken on other HWSD ponies as welfare cases.
The sentinal cases of HWSD in Canada, NZ and USA (the ones which led to the research project) all arose directly from breeding with ponies imported within the last 10 years. Ponies which were specifically selected to widen the local genepool! HWSD import list as follows:
Canada: Ireland, Finland, UK, USA
Denmark: Ireland, UK
Germany: Ireland, UK, France
New Zealand: Australia
Sweden: Ireland, UK, Denmark
Finland: Sweden
USA: Australia, Ireland, UK.
UK: Ireland"

Hur länge ska den här strutsmentaliteten fortgå? Vid det här laget borde det väl blivit klart och tydligt för ALLA att förnekarna bland de styrande i en mängd olika länder är personer som har och har haft HWSD-bärande hingstar och således bidragit till att sprida åkomman, ofta under lång tid. Och som av någon anledning därför anser sig ha rätt att inför andra blåneka till att vi har ett problem, trots att de rimligtvis själva bör ha varit bekanta med det sedan mycket lång tid. Att sticka upp bevis under näsan på dessa "experter" kommer man ingenstans med, de fortsätter att förneka.

Och det är ju inte bara de irländska höjdarna som tar sig rätten att sätta sig över vetenskapen, detsamma gäller på flera håll. Notera de rader jag markerat med fet stil i citatet ovan. För den som fortfarande till äventyrs inte kunnat lägga ihop två och två borde det kunna ge en förklaring till varför frågan varit så svår att lyfta i Sverige. Vi som intresserat oss för hovproblemen redan sedan tiden före CPRG har länge känt till att bl a den hingst som åsyftas varit bärare. Det har nu även bevisats, vilket indirekt nämndes på connemara.nu före jul. Det skedde inte genom att hingsten själv testades utan bevisades indirekt genom att en avkomma med fritestad mor testades som bärare. Vilken häst som testats har hemlighållits, och orsaken till det får väl antas vara rädslan för repressalier(!), men hingsten i fråga står numera som bärare i connemara.nu's hingstlista.

Jag har roat mig med att googla i vilken mån HWSS eller HWSD finns nämnt på olika Connemara-sällskaps hemsidor. Bland de länder, vars föreningar inte nämner det alls på sina sajter finns Sverige, Frankrike, Finland och den ursprungliga danska föreningen,

På ICCPS's webbsajt nämns HWSS i ett par flera år gamla nyhetsbrev från dotterföreningarna i Canada resp. Australien som publicerats där. På brittiska sällskapets sida finns det med i det meddelande till dotterföreningarna från ICCPS ordförande i höstas, som uppmanar till "försiktighet".

På Irlands hemsida nämns HWSD på ett par ställen, och frågan stod ju faktiskt på dagordningen nu. Men tunga namn förnekar, av allt att döma "i eget intresse".

Våren närmar sig och med den avelssäsongen. Börjar det inte bli hög tid att agera?
